A look back at the first day of the hybrid fair

The doors have closed for the day, and the live stream is concluded. We can look back at a day full of happenings and content – both on the digital platform, at Skansen and in Trondheim Spektrum.

After chairman of the board Kjell Ingebrigtsen and deputy chairperson Guri Riple at the Nor-Fishing Foundation had welcomed everyone to the fair, Trondheim’s mayor Rita Ottervik could welcome everyone to the host city, Trondheim. Ottervik displayed relief over the fact that Aqua Nor 2021 is taking place.

— Aqua Nor is one of the most important events in Trondheim, and the most important global event for the industry. We need a strong aquaculture industry to reach the SDGs we’ve decided on together globally – and Aqua Nor is an important place in building this strong industry, Ottervik said.

Norwegian values as a competitive advantage

Minister of Fisheries, Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen, also touched on the importance of the “Knowledge Capitol” of Trondheim, based on the foundation of the scientific platform of SINTEF and NTNU. He also talked of Norwegian values.

— We encourage growth, but only as long as it is sustainable. The concept of living in harmony with nature is something Norwegians are skilled at.

Sharing knowledge between UK and Norway

The British colleague of Mr. Ingebrigtsen, Victoria Prentis of the British parliament, conducted her first ever abroad journey as minister of fisheries.

— The first case of export from Norway to UK was recorded in 800 A.D. Today our relationship is based on friendship, cooperation and trade. Norway has got a lot more experience than us on being a coastal nation outside of the EU, so on the specific issue I think we have a lot to learn, Prentis said to laughter from the crowd. She also talked about the strong position Scotland has achieved as a aquaculture nation, and pointed out that Scottish salmon is in fact the most exported foodstuff from the UK as a whole.

Winner of the Innovation Award

The next step of the grand opening was the presentation of the three nominees for the Innovation Award – and soon thereafter the announcement that SeaRAS was the winner of the Nor-Fishing Foundation’s Innovation Award 2021.

A lot of highlights at the digital platform

At the digital platform, viewers could follow both the Aqua Nor Live channel, and the parallel broadcast on the Science&Research channel.

The hosts guided us through debates regarding the reputation of the industry and Norwegian special taxes, visited stands, introduced musical guests and interviewed students – to name a few examples from the stream.

First-grade professional content throughout the day

On the Science&Research channel the intersection between biology and technology in the future was a hot topic, with a range of heavyweights in the panel. After lunch a series of skilled experts talked about exposed aquaculture, before a new panel continued the day with talks about better utilization of resources. In closing a Nofima panel talked about how fish biology challenges new technology.
